When you’re chronically ill, an autoimmune condition like psoriasis can seem like one condition to many, just one more thing to deal with. I have psoriasis largely on my scalp, and have gone as far as shaving my head to ease the hassle of dealing with it. There are still days when I long to grab the hair clippers. Still, there are plenty of ways to help deal with skin conditions, if you can find a way to work them into your daily routine.
- Grab all the cream! Even something as lightweight as aqueous cream can help enormously when used to clean the body in the bath or in the shower. Scooped from the tub, or from a convenient pump, it is your first line of defense against dry, painful skin.
- Oats a plenty! Simple cheap porridge oats are your skins new best friend! Grab a handful to use as an exfoliant while you cleanse. Gentle enough from head to toe, gentle rubbing oats into your skin will slough away dead skin cells and soften. You can also pop a good scoop into a piece of muslin, tie and float it in the bath. The cleansing and softening properties of the oats will infuse your bath water.
- Talk to the professionals. It’s always a good idea to seek the advice of a professional. If your GP cannot prescribe you medication which adequately treats your skin condition, ask them to refer you to a dermatologist, whose medical specialty is skin.
- More cream! I’m sure that if you have a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, you are very familiar with the dearth of creams that come along with the diagnosis. Make applying cream to treat your skin condition (as opposed to cleansing, as above) a part of your routine, just like brushing your teeth. Whether it’s a prescription ointment or a rich but gentle (and always unscented) lotion, regular application is vital.
- Keep calm and calamine! Calamine lotion is a natural way to ease itching and is safe to use on open sores. Dab it on as often as your like on to well moisturised skin.
Personally, I find it easier to keep on top of my psoriasis than to treat a nasty flare. Sometimes they can’t be avoided but when they can, it does make life that much easier. Whether your treatment plan is self created or drawn up by a Doctor, making sure you keep to it is key. Eating healthy and reducing stress will help give your immune system a chance to fight back, as will drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep. These are things we can all do to stay well, but in my opinion these things are essential for people with chronic illness and/or skin conditions. I use an app to remind me to do the things I need to do to keep well every day.
